I had shovel towed home yesterday - it was running fine - it just shut off - got to looking at it and found that the advance unit for the points - had spun - broken roll pin . went to local parts shop - and got another unit . and now the bike will only fire one time and not run - have heard some of these replacement units were assembled wrong - this is not the case . took off carb and checked to see what kind of vacuum it had on intake - would suck palm of hand into it . put carb back on and still same thing .it will fire one time and thats it . if you try to run it with throttle , it just coughs and back fires out of carb and pipes .took nose cone off today to check timing marks - every thing is lined up . 1975 FXE with Bendix carb

 

Are the narrow lobe and fat lobe of the timing cam set to .018 for points opening ? You might have to retime this bike If you don't know how to do a static time let us know

 

got shovel running again - it turned out - that when I went to restart bike .the day it broke down - it backfired though carb . even bent air cleaner cover bracket (outer) . this carb has the after market adjustable main jet and idle tube (needle) - it turns out . it blew the tip off into main jet well - had to wiggle it free with a thick piece of copper wire - red lock tight - tip back on tube and it fired right back up - some things just happen - walk away - come back and look at it again - I was sure it was in the timing - not the case

 

I have a 1975 fxe with a butterfly kehan. Isn't the bendex the stock carb?
