Those front ends used the 10" rotor setup & brakes not much out there for upgrades and what is isn't cheap .The calipers on those rattle like crazy and that's part of the mushy feeling you get pads have to travel more which means more at the MC & lever travel . I know I used to have one those bastards , always felt wrong but stopped well . Big problem is that's about the only wide glide frontend that had the dual brakes everything later was single except some dressers and aftermarket stuff .
Did they use the older shovel style master cylinder or the bigger early evo stuff ? If it's the later you can get different bore MC's they can help some . Most are 5/8' and 3/4 " for duals .
Check these out they may work for you , I've used them in the past with good results and the new BDL version is going $500 and up

I have an 81 sturgis, thinking about a front brake upgrade as well. stock narrow front end with the dual disc. found an after market dual piston caliper set up,would I also have to swap to a bigger master cylinder? also what are the chances (with maybe a little modification)of calipers off an FXDX matching up?
