Default FXE Shifter

I am having trouble shifting into high gear, sometimes it comes out of gear and sometimes I have to re-shift to get it in. The shift linkage looks loose on the aluminun Pivot arm bushing. Can this be repaired by removing the solenoid from the primary cover? Or does the whole inner and outer covers, chain and clutch hub have to be removed? Thanks Neil

If you want to replace the gearbox linkage I think you'll have to remove the inner prime. You might consider taking thr trans out and checking the shifter forks while your at it.

I was hoping for a quick fix. I'll try pulling the solenoid first and if I can't remove the linkage I'll dig deeper!

I pulled the battery, solenoid and almost got the shifter pivot arm off. The pivot bolt is a couple of threads too long, it hits the back of the inner primary. Looks like I'll have to either pull the inner primary off or take the battery and oil bag out to repair a shifter that has 8,500 miles on it. Couple of threads shorter and it would be a Quick fix, they should hand an engineer a couple of wrenches and let them work on a bike before they over engineer one![:@]

Since this is a ratchet top, if it goes into the other gears OK, then it should go into 4th gear OK, since the ratchet top returns the shift linkage, etc. to the same spot, and it doesn't move any further no matter what gear you are selecting. If you're lucky you might find that your foot position has changed, and that is causing the problem. If you're not that lucky, then it might be a damaged or misaligned shift fork, or the drum (aka shifter cam) could be damaged, or it might need the forks and drum adjusted.

Poco I know you're right, I keep coming back to the inevitable,I'll have to eventually have a look inside. There is a lot of slop in the outside shifter assembly and I would like to rule that out completely. I hate to take another one down until I finish the two I'm working on now. When I get another one running I'll tear this one apart and go thru everything. Thanks for the advice
