Removing Bendix and Pinon shaft on a 69
I have the primary cover off my 69 FLH and I am looking to replace the Bendix. My question is, Can I remove the pinion shaft assembly out without removing the starter or starter housing? The arm that engages the bendix seems to be holding the assembly in. Id like not to have to tear my crap off then I really have too. Clymers shows this procedure involving the starter and housing being removed. Anyone?

I am not a fan of the aftermarket repair manuals though some may be very good.
I recommend getting a factory shop manual. They ain't cheap, but they are worth every penny.
Also, don't fiddle around in that primary until you have disconnected your battery cable for the starter. If you move that bendix assy. too far it may close the contacts in the solenoid for the starter motor with very unpleasant results for you.
That said, yeah, you should be able to get the shaft out of there without removing the starter, just be careful you don't bend the yoke on the linkage for the solenoid.
If it's just too big a hassle taking it out, removing the starter will make it a piece of cake to pull the shaft.
