Default Ignition Problems

Have owned my 77' Low Rider for about 8 months and just finished the ground up restoration and ran into a reoccurring ignition problem. The shovel had Compu-Fire electronic ignition system in the cone but it was shorted. Talked to the previous owner and said he loved the newer ignition system, so I installed another just like the old one. Now It's shorted too and I'm out $110 bucks. Has anyone else used this type of ignition system with any luck?

I guess they're spiro wound. I just ordered the stock style wires from JP cycles but I forgot that a stock 77' low rider came with points when I ordered them. The new electonic ignition system I burned up suggested using a 3 ohm coil but it didn't say anything about special plug wires. You think thats the problem?

Spiro wound plug wires can cause grief with electronic style ignitions Look on the plug wires it should say Make sure their suppression core wires I did several installations of Dyna 2000 ign systems with spiro wound plug wires They would run great and then shut down After I changed the plug wires from spiro to suppression core the Dynas never had another problem So if you do have spiro wound plug wires take them off install suppression core wires and your broken ign system might come back to life Good luck
