Default knockin in my primary?

I've got a knocking coming from my primary when the bike is in neutral and the clutch is out. It will quit when the rpms are raised or i pull the clutch in. I'm thinking my throw out beariing is the cause but was hoping somebody could save me a bunch of searching.
This is on a 78 FXE. I had to replace the compensator last summer when the weld broke on the old one. The sound popped up now this spring when i was getting it ready for this season.

Only way to find out is to open her up, if nothing found in primary side, pull your kicker cover to see if throw out bearing is good.

Could be the clutch hub ,a sure sign is when you try to start it the starter will make a funny noise or the kicker may slip. Not matter what you need to take it apart to fix it.

Primary chain tensioned correctly? I had a loose chain once that caused a primary knock.

Flying: When you talk about kicker slipping? You mean it skips when you kick it over or won't hook up?
Charlie Bone: The chain is set right but if it's to tight could this be a cause?

I wouldn't think so, but don't know. Is it set right or too tight? If it was too tight and is still there after setting chain tension correctly, that wouldn't be it.....obviously.

Good luck.

Double check the tightness, or lack of, the compinsating nut..

had mine come loose some years back, and it make a knocking noise..

if you find it is loose, you may want to double check the condition of the teeth on your rotor...

I had a problem like that a few years ago. The inner primary was cracked around the mainshaft support bearing, causing the bearing to bind and unbind.

Bet the cup inside the compensator is worn and the spring pack is not fully compressed and allowing the sliding cam to run loose.
