I am looking at a 79 FXS.I am unclear about this particular bike? it has 1340 shovel motor,, all black cases , with primary and final drive belts. The owner had the vin # run at Harley shop and it came back as a Sturgis model. But i didn,t think the sturgis model came out until 82? Also sturgis model is FXB . The bike is almost mint condition with 16000 original miles. $5500.00 . any body know anything about it? thanks

 

That set-up was used prior to 82,I am not a history buff but do remember seeing them in early 1980.Does it have the Federal ID tag on the frame down tube? If so I would not worry about it at all ( as long as the numbers match).Let us know / Good Luck !

 

Are you sure its a '79. Belt drives and Sturgis's didn't start till '80 (went till 82). There were no belt drives in '79 at all. What's the Vin? Last two digt's for 79 are H9 and 1980 is J0.

 

that's why I'm baffled ? starts 7G which is FXS and ends H9 for 1979 . ifthanks it was a sturgis it should be fxb. I spoke to a rep at HD headquarters today he will look for any special builds in 79. everybody else i talk to says it must have been done later . owner says it came that way.

 

Looking at your thumbnail, your bike is far from stock. 7G is a FXS, a Sturgis would be a 1H. My guess is over the years your bike was customized.
