Single Vs. Dual Disk brakes

I am planning on installing a FL style front end on my 83' FXSB as this is the look/style I really want but I have been stuck on the idea that the dual disk front brakes are superior to single. All my previous Harly's have had dual but the "deal' for the front end I am getting comes with a GMA master cyl and single caliper for what is a small amount more. Is it really that big of a difference? Heck, all my previous jap bikes had single with no problems. Do dual disks really provide better stopping power or is it not enough of a difference to matter ?

How much weight and stopping will you be doing?
It's no so much how well it stops this time, but how much heat is generated each time and adds up. If you are riding hard, braking hard and riding 2 up or really loaded it will make a difference.
If you are not a hard brake user, you will probably never notice the difference. Braking is a tire traction issue, and a single disk can lock the front tire no problem. When the disk/pads get real hot, not so well.

A lot of older chopper style bikes removed the front brake all together. It might mean relying on a little more rear break, but unless your carrying a passenger all the time and/ or doing a lot of like mountain typs riding (breaking a lot for turns) the single should work fine. Besides, who wants to stop?

I have an '83 FXSB too. It has dual disc on it and I just got an '06 Wide Glide with single disc. Both have excellent braking power and I really can't tell any difference at all. I wouldn't let the brake set up bother you, if that's the look you want, go for it.

Thanks all for the input. Kind of what I was thinking anyway just got used to the "looks" of the dual disks but Superior has a complete Fl style front end for what seems to be a good price and it includes a front wheel, fender and the GMA master cyl and caliper.

I am very enthusiastic about brakes, and would put duals on the rear if I could. I Ride hard and long, and my two main reasons for dual brakes are 1) grand Canyon and 2) Rocky Mountains. Brakes parts heat up, and heat can cause failure. How do you ride? Where do you ride? In most cases 60-0 is just as important as 0-60.
