Shovelheads Forever...FRMF!
i have a 1985 shovelhead flhp was wondering if i have evo cases i found this on line from an auction mine has the 4 star cases not 5 so was wondering how rare is my bike
  • In 1985 Harley-Davidson produced a limited run of police Shovelhead's with left over parts, however the Y ran out of 5 star shovelhead cases before completing the run
  • To complete the run, Harley-Davidson machined new EVO cases to accept the last few shovel top ends

Hi you should be able to contact a dealer and get any info from the vin on 81 and newer bikes. Sounds like your right. My buddy has a 85 flhp here in nh. Post a pic of your bike. Like to see it.

My 1984 FXEF Shovelhead also has the 4 stars on the case. The engine number is supposed to be on the left case below the front cylinder. Mine is on the left case under the rear cylinder. My VIN ends in EY063003 and was built March 6, 1984 but not shipped out of the factory until August 23, 1985. Harley doesn't know why they kept it around. They don't know if it was a problem child, one that they were testing / experimenting with, or what.

I have asked what the 4 stars on the engine case serial number block represented as well. I do not know it to be a fact but knowledgeable folks have told me that the early EVO's had Shovelhead crankshafts. They specifically state that Shovels did not use EVO's cranks or cases. Again I do not know what is factual.

Mine has front chain, Wet (Diaphragm) Clutch, which is correct for my serial number BBK2, and rear chain.

I too had thought I had something special as I also saw that picture of Willie G. putting Gold keys into the Last Shovelhead, which was an FXWG with that serial number 06125. I either failed to notice Last Production Shovelhead or they did not state Production in the article. The 500 or 550 last FLH models or one to each dealer also mislead that they are the last Shovelheads; they are the last of that model with a Shovelhead engine.

I will post a pic that I found somewhere on the net a few years ago. The pic is not mine and I do not know who should get the credit for the pic, but I am posting as information.

I had a 84 flh x special edition bagger I sold while back it was the black model. It had 4 stars on the case brake pedal side instead of vin. I think they made 1200 or so. 600 white and 600 black.

Now that this is revived...
Can anyone confirm/deny, that the early vs Late 1984 Production numbers in the VIN denote the old Shovelhead clutch vs the new (POS IMO) clutch??
Also...any Documentation on the First Year and Model of 5-speed belt drive final??

Thanks

I also have a 84 FLHS, It was red [not anymore]. Bought it in 86 from a barefoot and and very pregnant chick that was all kinds of pissed off at her old man.
