Default transmission oil level

I just picked up my 78 FXE this evening. I am dying to put some miles on it but want to make sure the transmission fluid is full. Can anybody tell me where the drain plug is and how to check the level? Sorry but I am a learning newbie when it comes to shovels! Thank you.

On the right side below the battery is the transmission side cover. If you have a kick starter it is attached to the forward part of the transmission cover. To the rear of the cover is the fill plug. On the face of the cover, if you have a late model cover, is a small allen plug. This plug is used to check the oil level. Prop the motorcycle upright, remove the fill plug and than the allen plug. You add oil until it just starts to come out of the allen plug hole. If you do not have an allen plug, hold the bike upright and fill the transmission until it just touches the threads of the fill plug hole. Originally Harley used the same oil as you put in the motor. Later they switched to a gear oil type lube, either will work. You can tell by the smell if you have gear lube instead of oil in it. The drain plug is on the bottom right side of the transmission, don't confuse the plug for the 5th mount bolt which is nearby.

I should have added get yourself the service manual for your model (factory type) and a parts manual. These will answer many of your questions.
