I've got a '79 FXS80 motor that needs pushrod seals, and they break that year up.
Is there a way to tell if mine is early or late '79? 7g61106h9 is the vin#

Thanks, Pat

If you have cork seals, its early. if you have rubber o-Rings its late. pop the lock and see whats in there.

I had a 1974 but I switched to the O-Ring tubes for a better and longer lasting seal.

Thanks robpp, that helps a ton.

You didnt say which ones you had.

I ALWAYS used either factory or James black rubber O-RINGS. I had polished cases and if they leaked I had a lot of cleaning to do. A set of rubber o-rings will last years and never leak a drop.

But if you have the corks, you could try those blue things.

Good Luck.

Sorry, corks it is. Can't change to O-Rings without changing tubes then?

yeah, that's right. You need the late 79 tubes. Everything else is fine. Lifter blocks and such. I think I did that mod back in like 1990 and spent 60-70 bucks at the dealer buying those parts. Am guessing now you would have to go aftermarket. Colony made some tubes sets, not sure if they made them all. If you consider the tubes, you only want the 79-81 tubes. After that they went to quad seals and the Im pretty sure the blocks are different.

I think the blues are gonna have to do it for now.
One of my hyd. units came apart (piston came out) and the other didn't, so I may
go to solid conversion kit with hyd. pushrods. Any thoughts?

You must mean Solid lifters and Adjustable push rods. Thats what i ran in strokers for many moons. I would swear by Sifton adjustable push rods and solid lifters back when. looks like they now sell solid pushrods and the adjuster is in the lifter. Regardless, I always liked Sifton.

Not sure who makes it. J&P #431-552. Heard good and bad.
Got 2 hyds. out and they're dif and don't know which is right.
For the money I'd just as soon go to solids and know what I got.
I DO have adjustable pushrods.

I dont have any experience with that hydraulic conversion kit but it looks like it would work. You remove the hydraulic part of your current lifter and replace with the part in that kit.
