White grey smoke is usually oil burning. Its possible in could be the headgasket allowing oil to be sucked in. The gasket between the head and rockerbox usually just makes a mess when it leaks, Its possible it could run down to the exhaust pipe and cause it to smoke but I doubt that is the problem. If you have to pull the head anyway you might as well check the condition of the rings and valves while your at it.

how does the bike run at operating temp. @ highway speed?
does the smoke from the pipe get worse when you come to a stop?
I am amusing when you say smoke from the pipe it is coming from the outlet and not from oil leaking on it?

Bike might lose a little h.p. @oper. Temp. @ h.way speed almost unnoticeable. Exactly! Smoke gets worse when i am idling @ stops. When i feather the throttle @stops more smoke emitts.

sounds like exhaust guides and or rings but rings usually cause smoke all the time..
Shovel heads are notorious for taking out the exhaust guides.
