Default crankcase breather location

Where should the crankcase breather be positioned on a 77 fxe? Some say as low as possible, like on the bottom of the frame. Others say up high at least at above the crankcase if not at seat height.
thanks in advance.

I don't think it really matters, but I have always positioned them low and out of the way of making a mess with oil vapor.

well the argument has been that with it mounted low, that the oil will seek the path of least resistance and push oil out through the breather. I am trying to solve large losses of oil while riding a short distance. seems to be coating my tire. no apparent line loss.

If you are getting a significant amount of oil from the breather hose you are probably wet-sumping and need to address the check valve in the oil pump that is supposed to prevent that.

Route it to dump on the rear chain. Check the adjustment on the rear chain oiler also, if opened too far will dump excessive oil.

a large amount of oil out the breather is a problem, ether wet sumping or a problem with the timed breather. the breather bore could be damaged (look closely at the small holes in the bore) also the vapor separator, at the bottom you will see a small hole, make sure that it is clear. the breather will pull a vacuum in the vapor camber (that's why it's timed)if every thing is right, if not oil on the back tire. also check the oil pump seal.
