RE: need clutch help..please?
are you running the oem springs, pressure plate and spring retainer?(yes to all)
same amount of steels and discs as before? (yes)
how far are the adjusting nuts from the end of the studs?
right now there loosen all the way because i dont think what harley says is right
maybe 1.03 to inside of outter disc
but not to face of outer disc
if i follow harleys instructions i have no spring compression there totally compressed
what your asking.......when fully compressed theres alot of stud showing past the muts
1/2-3/4 of an inch sticking out past nuts

RE: need clutch help..please?
Back the nuts to the end of the studs and turn them in a turn or two
and if you have a kick start use it with the plugs in the engine {assuming all the pieces are installed on the engine} kick the engine over while watching the clutch assembly and see if their is enough pressure to kick the engine over if not give the nuts another click or two.
if no kick start use the starter but if the outer primary needs to be installed do so first. I'm not familiar with your starting system having a brain fade at the moment

I'm not saying from loose when I install my springs I already have them loaded in the pressure plate and use a big flat washer to hold them all together in the pressure plate using the nut to hold things together. with my setup I have my adjusting nuts about where I told you to start. not sure what may be different with you set up sorry I can't be more help

RE: need clutch help..please?
Page 6-18 from service manual [genuine H-D] and I will quote-"Draw down adjusting nuts until distance from back of pressuse plate to front of clutch releasing disc equals 1-1/32". And by the way you do not have a 5 'finger' it is a5 screw clutch hub. There are NO fingers in/on a H-D clutch.

with the 5 finger hub did you get the tamer or the adjustable retaining ring?
do you have the big fix?
you say you have 5 friction plates and 4 steels, correct?
and you have the stock OEM springs, and the stock OEM pressure plate?(its the one with the crude spot welds and matches up to the collar. the measurement is from the surface of the collar to the folded edge of the retainer. this is if it is all stock and only a 5 finger hub change.
the measurement should be 1 1/32" as the starting point.
if you have a kicker you can check when the clutches grab and adjust if necessary before a test ride. br carefull when tsking your measurements, check in 3 different places, and remember with a 5 finger hub you always have one loose nut.
let me know how you make out....
