Check out the 1925 style Harley solo seat. It is 16" long and 17" wide. I know Corbin-Gentry makes them. I'm sure others do as well. They don't come with thick padding but (in my opinion) they don't need it because there is so much surface area for support. Picture a tractor seat and imagine how much time a farmer would have to sit in that seat. They are very comfortable. There are a few variations of the seat, with or without skirting and different style studs/conches can be put on 'em if you like that kind of stuff. Putting that style seat on your bike with 3" spring mounts and a front pivot mount will make you sit up higher and you can set it as far back as you are willing to build the mounts (or pay to have 'em made).
This is the most comfortable seat I have ever owned.
BUT, ya definitely should see how it looks on your bike before ya buy it if you are sensitive about aesthetics because they are a big seat.
If you are interested in that style of seat, let me know and I'll go take a couple of pictures of it and figure out how to post 'em on this thread. I have it on a 1979 FXS which is the same style frame as your bike.
Good luck in your search.

megawatt- I would like to see a pic of that seat on your bike. I have a set of 74 FLH hard bags and tour pak for my 79 FXE and need a solo to mount the tour pak

gypsyrider52- That is a NICE looking FXE you have there!

The pic makes the seat look wider than the 5 gallon tanks but I just measured it and the tanks are a bit wider.
I think I did the picture thing correctly . I don't see it while I'm writing this.

Grandpa56,
I'm sure you noticed that the Shovelhead engine has been replaced with an Evo. The bike was originally had an 80" Shovel but that was long gone by the time I got the bike from a salvage yard 3 or 4 years ago.
You and gypsyrider52 have good lookin' Shovels.
I like the look of those hardbags.
I have a worn out '76 FXE project bike waiting to be resurrected. I'm slowly getting the parts together...
