Getting a Key made...

RE: Getting a Key made...
I've had my '66 FLH for over 27 years now, been in the family longer that that. Over the years, I've had two keys made for it. The firet one said "Briggs & Stratton" on it (I'm told the original key also said B&S). The second just said GAS. From a gas cap, maybe? Anyway, the name seems to fit, so does the key.

Anybody have to get a key made on an older Shovel??
The dealer is telling me that I have a non-complete VIN...
I just gave him what was on the title...
I don't know if it makes a difference that it is a Police Edition...
VIN is 7H#####JO only 9 Characters...
thanks..

My ignition key housing went out years back, so I got a (3) position ign switch, there by keeping my sequence the same as the day I pick it up (1981), the guy from the dealer came out just before I rode away, went over some things and said “hay you want to have a day time headlight always on” ?
No I said, so he bent over put a long needle nose pliers, in back of the switch and cut the white wire, that was it, it starts without a headlight on, if you want it on just turn the key one more position, it’s on.
I learned over the years if you have low current battery, turning out that headlight (daytime) will get you home, at night just have someone ride in front of you, you still have taillights and turn signals !
I got it at J&P Cycles, I think under $20 with two round type keys, like the vending machines.
Save headaches trying to find a key, this set up is for FX types only or between the cyl. Not for FL types.
Good luck, ride safe,
cj
PS: the VIN number looks to be 1980, just a guess....

RE: Getting a Key made...
has anyone eve tried having a key made for the steering lock? On a new bike , did the ignition key also fit the steering lock? I have a lot of misc keys and I did find one that went into the lock. So I was thinking like someone else said, If I have a blank to fit seems that a GOOD lock smith cold make a key to fit? anyone?
check this out, my first bike, 1970 Bridgestone, $400 new

RE: Getting a Key made...
FWIW
My brother had to get a key made for a '80 FXEF (before I bought it from him). He had to get in touch with someone at MOCO. Seems there is some guy in a dusty office that knows all the key numbers. Sent my brother the key information and he took it to the local dealer and ordered a key.
