ok I've had about four starter drive gears to fly apart in the inner primary and they a mess to clean out with all the small springs and gears involved, is there a way to know in advance before one fly apart
I've never had one do that, so other then trying another brand I'm wondering of something else is causing this. Are you certain the bendix is fully retracting from the ring gear when the button is released?

well you may have a point i don't use the starter gear lever it's too big of a hassle i thought with the starter housing needle bearing and the outer primary needle bearing was enough
Interesting, never seen a shovel style self-destruct before much less 4 of them. You got alignment issues if it's getting in far enough to eat things. OEM or aftermarket primaries, the starter ? Outer brand in particular. ?
