Bike......81 shovel......frame and motor original.
Just replaced engine oil and was going to add 20w50 to primary.
But I saw a few posts emphatically saying NOT to add oil to primary!
I've been under the impression oil should be added..... just enough to touch bottom of clutch basket.
And I cant find any reference to this in the manual.
So......add oil or not?

If it's all factory original then you DO NOT ADD OIL. The bike has an oiler in the primary for the chain. The only time you would add oil is if someone sealed off the primary and disabled the oiler in the primary. And if it has been sealed off, don't use motor oil, use ATF or a primary lube.
P.S. Buy a factory service manual, it will help you immensely.

But I got tired trying to find the information I needed.
Can you tell me what page that info is on please.
I have trouble finding lots if unfo in the maual.
Like today........I couldn't find the torque specs for the primary bolts!
I looked in what I thought were all the relevant categories but couldn't find the answer!

Couldn't tell you This is from a parts manual I have. Look up the clutch and compensator, the primary contents will be near that.
You still need to verify it's all hooked up and functioning. That's where the manual comes in. Read it.
Why would someone block off the oiler???
What's the advantage to that??
Probably for the same reasons Harley doesn't (and hasn't for some time) offer a primary chain oiler. Separate sealed systems. Allows use of different fluids if you desire.
Prevents cross contamination. If you run a belt or different clutch.

In Theory, it don't run "dirty" oil thru engine...In Practice, The Oil is only passing thru the Return side of Pump, thru Oil Filter!!
I will Not Isolate again!! Waste.. and I feel good ole Engine Oil, which the Factory recommends on that system, stays Inside, better than ATF, certainly.
BTW If you do Isolate.. I have Not found any Problems with just any old Oil (cheap) as all yer doing is putting Just enough to get on the Chain...Just!!!

I'm in the opposite camp on this one, I would never go back to the stock oiler because it is just something else to go wrong. Interesting point about running motor oil in the primary, I might try that but my ATF stays inside OK.
