By "self adjusting" I meant "manual" adjusting I guess.

The safety wire is used to prevent the bolts from loosening, later bikes used locktabs.

Here is an illustration of a proper 2 bolt safety, remember, the wire should look like it will pull the bolt head in the tightening direction.

Use .032" diameter stainless steel safety wire.

I use these. Don't feel like dicking around with safety wire.

Thanks, I have very little time wrenching on Shovelheads, so I never saw those, they are a much better alternative to safety wire for this application.
