Bull, seems like oil is building up w/ no place to go. Couple of quick thoughts. When was the last time you cleaned the tappet screen. Another thought...the ball for the check valvecould be hanging up and might need to be replaced.

Bull...on a stock HD oil pump there are 2 plugs on top of the oil pump. The one on the outside is for the relief valve; the one on the inside is for the check valve. I would suggest you replace the spring and check ball. The spring will come out easily. To get the check ball you need a pencil magnet.

Also remember...once you pull the pull the plug, oil in the motor and tanks will seek the lowest point of escape/relief (in this case the check valve), so you might consider draining down the oil in the tank so you are not dealing with oil escaping from the opening.

Did you replace the chrome push rod covers? I know that some after market sets (like Custom Chrome) have the lips on the tubes just a little too big and the tubes look like they are sitting flush in the tappet blocks (or heads) when they are not, thus allowing oil to leak between them and the gaskets as they are not putting a flush pressure on the seals. I've ended up grinding the lip down to get a good fit on the chrome tube covers in the past....just something else to look at.

Are the drain holes aligned in the lifter blocks? The roller assembly that your lifter sits in has a hole in the side. If I remember correctly, the holes in the rollers have to be faced inward. I don't have a manual in front of me. Someone check it out.

Where you able to find out what was causing the leak and if so, what was it?

there's a fix for this from back in the day, you don't hear about it much since almost all lifter blocks have been updated by now. stock, the lifters had 2 drain holes that would "Y" in the lifterblock to drain oil from the pushrod tubes. the update is to drill the holes slightly larger and into an "X" giving much needed drainage to the pushrod tubes through the lifter blocks.
