Transmission removal woes

Transmission removal woes
I’m trying to pull the transmission out of a shovel, and I’ve got it almost out. However, I can’t seem to get it past the front of the swingarm. The rear “ear” is contoured very tightly opposite the swingarm. The manual doesn’t mention removing the swingarm. It states to pull the transmission with the mounting plate included. That wouldn’t work because one of the rear mounting bolts from the trans to the plate is directly below the ears for the primary and I really doubt the bolt will clear. What am I missing here? If I have to remove the swingarm, I will, but I’d like to have the chassis be ready to roll around the garage as long as I can. Thanks!

I’m swapping the non-original rotary top that was in the bike for a ratchet top that I’m gonna rebuild. Which brings me to my next question…How can I tell which rebuild kit I need? The date code on the trans is X7804. I know that means it’s a 77 transmission, but Jim’s offers two kits for 77. One is the L76-E77 kit (33031-76E) and the other is the late 77-early 79 kit (33031-76L). Is my trans early or late 77? And what are the differences?

That's good to know. I'm guessing there's no way to tell what bearings are there until the countershaft is removed? I would like to avoid pulling it apart further until I have the kit. If I can figure it out based solely on the date code, that'd be ideal, so I'll wait for someone to chime in. Thanks.
