Still running the stock carb and air cleaner on both my 84 FLH and my 78-1/2 FXE. Rebuilt both. Parts are easy to find and they are very easy to maintain. I get really great gas mileage on the 84 on long road trips.

to panz4ever & old mago,
I ,think these examples say a lot for keeping the bikes equipped with OEM Carbs & Air Cleaners, for sure it just depends on the owners taste ,if they like Stock or Custom, but i think if your into Old School , you gotta go with OEM .

to MREESMITH,
thanks for posting , is the 1st photo the '82 & the 2nd photo the '81 ? obvious difference is the Handel Bars any thing else ? I don't mean to side track this thread just thought that a few pictures of bikes w/ the OEM Air Cleaners might be an inspiration for others who are thinking of going back to stock Carbs & Air Cleaners . . .

Yes the ‘82 is first and then the ‘81. Handlebars is the main difference - buckhorn and drag. The ‘82 tank decals (which are missing on mine) don’t have the AMF above the bar & shield. Also my ‘82 doesn’t have an oil cooler like the ‘81. Carb is the same for both and haven’t had issues with either one.
