My mechanic is asking me the same question - he's not comfortable putting the stock oil pump cover on an S&S pump body. It was recommended by Tatro (a mechanic that rebuilt my 45 WL motor and really seemed to know his ****). Considering I already got the S&S hydraulic kit, I'm thinking it would only make sense to get a better performing pump. But I'm trying to avoid any new/modern looking pieces on the motor, hence using the original cover.

If I don't end up using the pump, I'll be happy to send it to you - it's the least I can do for the advice you've been giving me.

Here's a picture of the other side:

Its not fair for me to tell you not to use that one and keep the machine OEM correct in the pump visual

i would install it on a machine i was keeping for myself - new springs bring the pump back to line pressure and the ball - if your guy does not have the tooling pm me for an address we will put it back into spec so the slumping hopefully stops for a long time

Thanks John. If we end up going that route and he can't do it, I'll PM you for that address.

Update on this tranny I bought last year - my mechanic finally got around to checking it before we put it in the bike, and unfortunately it was a mess. It's unfortunate that people do work like this. But I knew I was taking a risk paying someone I didn't know to build it for me. At least I have good parts.. but we have to start from scratch now.

My mechanic is usually skeptical of others work - so he opened the lid. Lock tabs weren’t bent, nuts were completely loose, missing bolts, metal shavings inside (no idea how), no free play at all. He was pretty disgusted, and so am I. But at least now I’ll have piece of mind it will be done right.

It keeps getting worse and worse... this rebuilt tranny I bought turned out to be complete mess. One of the studs was held in with JB weld... I had to choose between buying a replica case, or asking my mechanic to fix it. I chose the latter...

Any idea how I can tell what kind of speedo (ratio) to get? This tranny is a 4 speed, but I'm not sure what year - all the gears and parts are new. The bike is a 1976 FL, but this is a newly rebuilt replacement tranny.

Any input would be helpful! Thanks...
