If you are truly hearing a ping, here is a quick Google on the ping.
I would have guessed timing but you might think about the fuel you are using.
I use high test unless low compression pistons.

The article mentions a lean condition can cause ping but really a very lean will not. Only right about peak when combustion is the hottest. Adding fuel (going richer) cools the chamber and removes ping.
However too rich leaves deposits and wastes fuel.

I don't think you can add VOES to that ignition system. I added it to my 79 and it works great, got to keep full timing most of the time except at low rpm big throttle (low vacuum) where it automatically retards the spark and eliminates the bad pinging that I had.

No voes available to that ignition - if i had input in the beginning with ignition choices 53-644K ultima set at dual fire 5500 red line fast #1 curv no voes until it needed it 99.9 percent never need it

i still think the acc pump spray is in this as in too much and it could have a wide full delivery sprayer < that does not help anything - but i am not looking at it

taking practice guesses from behind a curtain like everyone else

I appreciate the input everyone.

John I'm pretty sure it's actual pinging I'm hearing. My other shovel had those clutch symptoms you are describing - that's a different sound but I can see why you mentioned it. Also, it basically pings whenever it's under an initial load or accelerating regardless of what gear.

I checked the mechanical advance and it appeared to be sticking again, so I suspect that could be the culprit. I will fool with that a little more and try what John said to get that moving freely.

Im using standard compression S&S pistons (8 to 1). I'm running either 90 or 91 ethanol free gas from two different stations, so I doubt that is the issue.

When I get this back tot the shop we will very that S&S has the flywheel marked correctly for TDC...

BTW - here's a link to a short video (not me) which clearly presents the undeniable sound of extreme pinging: https://youtube.com/shorts/wkju_LZV8z4?feature=shared

DONT tune it to gas you cant buy everyplace - that is a mistake

it has to run correctly on the junk gas we all are buying or this will never go away

Hey John today we got the Ultima ignition you recommended. Had to find the gold colored timing rotor they require, but we got lucky. Installed the 3 ohm coil, and the new ignition. Static timed it from TDC according to the instructions. For some reason the bike seems to be running on one cylinder... it was popping and backfiring really bad, The front pipe was warm, the rear was hot... so we shut it off and double checked everything. Not sure what's going on... but we quit for the night. Maybe we fouled a plug, but I doubt it.

Sent a pic only to show the dip switch settings. Ignore the timing position, when it was set properly it was almost all the way counter clockwise..

We'll do a fresh start tomorrow.

Are you using a single fire coil (3 post electrical connections) or a Dual for coil (2 post electrical connections)? If Single fire switch 6 should be up (on)..
And did you set the static timing with the front cylinder on top dead center?

We are using the Dynatek 3 ohm dual fire coil, and yes we set static timing with the front cylinder on top dead center. It was the same exact process when we installed the Compu-Fire ignition.

Does the timing rotor have 2 slots in it?

Yes, it has two slots - the instructions indicate you need the gold timing rotor and they give a part number so that's what we used.
