Thinking about a NEW rat rod build...

Some guys swear by a .0295 jet but I've alway had tuning issues when I tried them on various machines.

[QUOTE=98hotrodfatboy;21348939]Set idle to 900 rpm.. what ignition are you running.. Also what intermediate jet are you running..
Compu-Fire ignition. Not too sure I understand the advance curve and VOES settings, but I'm simply following the directions. This bike is still a 74 cubic inch.
I will check to see what intermediate I'm running, but it looks like it needs to up a size, exactly as you're describing. My mixture screw was 2-1/2 turns out. (But I want to make sure my timing is in range first.)
Thanks!

2.5 turns out does indicate a small intermediate jet. If I was to guess on a stock 74"er, I'd say it has an .028" intermediate.. That's just a guess though based on my experience with an S&S.. And if so a .0295" should suffice..
Your Compufire ignition uses a static led to set base timing, right? If you followed their directions you should be good.. I used the red Compufire ignition with centrifugal advance on my 76 and must say it worked flawlessly.. I recently gave it to a friend for his shovel because I sold mine..

Good one! I'll definitely remember that.
I went up on step to the larger .031 intermediate, and now the bile likes to be at 1.5 turns out, so at least I know I'm using the right sized intermediate. The bike still breaks up at higher RPM's but it seems to have improved. I will forget everything I think I know about intermediate and main jetting, and throw logic out the window. I'll try going up from my 66 main to a 70 and see if that clears up the issue.

I put together a 76' that had not run in 4 years and had a Super E. Had a mid-range break up so I started playing with an increase in intermediate and main jets. All along it had a bad spark plug wire end that seemed to work but wasn't snug on the plug. I had ordered new ones but received the wrong set and waited a week to reorder. Wouldn't you know after I got the new wires on I ended up back with the original jetting.
I swore it was a mixture break up.
