Default What to do, What to do???

Hey all, new member here, just a young guy with a new to me shovel that i love already.....just got bit by the bug and i love it. Anyways here is my issue i bought a 1981 fxwg 80 that needs engine work, front cylinder was smoking bad. My mechanical ability is fine but i cant do machine work, never tried but would love to learn, i would much rather do things myself as i can trust ME. I would rather spend more money learning and making mistakes than just handing it off to someone else. Anywho, my front cylinder is grooved and my pistons are already .10 over. I already have s s 3 5/8 cylinders which i bought used so they would need .10 over pistons or more as well. I planned on building an "88" as i read that they are a great running, long lasting engine. My plans are to get it going asap just to ride and do other mods later. I would have to send the motor out of state as i dont know any awesome machine shops in the pittsburgh area that have shovel knowledge. I have confidence that i can rebuild the engine myself but balancing the crank, boring cylinders, increasing heads for 3 5/8 cylinders, i can not do. My heads have new guides, valves and seals my heads do not have brass guides and stainless valves either, thats a plus. Is it more cost effective to just buy an ultima 96 for $4300 or get my motor machined for the 88. Honestly what i would like to do is just find a front cylinder that i can get bored for .10 over so i can just use my current setup to get her back on the road for now and build a 88 with new cases and such on a stand, but i dont want to buy cheap *** taiwan cylinders as it seems they are garbage. Just need some advice, sorry about the long read, every bit of help is much appreciated!!!

Current front cylinder. Anyone know why this happened? Lack of oil? Piston rings not broken in? ring tolerance not in spec? Thanks!

s s 3 5/8 cylinders, going to need checked and gone over.

also got these heads with the cylinders, they do fit on the 3 5/8 cylinders but they are ported and someone did an extra shitty job, the valve guide literally just fell out when i pulled the valve and it looks like a head gasket blew. So i wouldnt feel good running these, the heads that came on my motor are in much better condition. These would need alot more work and id rather buy std or sorenson performance heads, unless it was way cheaper to fix these. Im not looking to have a drag bike.

the head in the picture blew out the head gasket and the surface must be warped

the block need to be bored as well to 3 5/8 for the cylinders

the damage in the engine in the bike is because the wrist pin clip came out and the wrist pin was rubbing on the cylinder wall < who ever effd up who did it last

other things to consider - the oil tank needs to be sterilized as the shavings ended up in it - plus the oil pump is ground up and all the oil lines are impregnated with grains of iron - the breather valve and the blocks bore are all suspect for damage - if its a return system everything in the primary is also contaminated

take pictures of everything and strip and clean it very well before pictures so we can see to be able to help

Should be easy out . Breather port is where anything in the crankcase goes before getting pulled back into the oil pump. Good chance things are scored up in there so it can be stuck a bit . See if you can get to rock a little to find a smooth spot to pull it out.

Thanks guys, it took some force to get the gear out, I assume I need an oversized breather gear and to have the hole bored out as well? I can feel grooves with my finger nail in the breather and in the bore.

Somebody did a decent job opening the breather port hole, wonder if they got the timing correct. Honestly that isn't as chewed as I thought it would be.
