Points Static Timing - WTF...
#31
Just went through the same nightmare. Couldn't get it timed for nothing. Then I took points backing plate off and found springs all wrapped in knots. Changed springs, worked great...for a minute. The springs were catching on the screw that held the points in. Wired weights in so they couldnt open, re-checked timing and it fired right off, ran well at idle and low Rev. Putting in electronic ignition tomorrow. I'm done with points.
Oh, and recently the quality of Points sets is Much less a Problem than faulty Condensers..I won't even put Chiwanese one in...Preferring to simply reuse the ones that were Working!!!

personally I prefer points over any electronic ignition,
they are so simple to set & maintain, & if they ever go south on a run near or far, are easily repaired or even replaced with a spare set Imy bikes always carry,
if & when (they will) your electronic ignition goes KaBlewie Armstrong, in the middle of nowhere, you will be going home on a flatbead & face a bigger bill than the $10-$20 that a set of points will cost,....
BTW, I also have Morris Magnetos on ALL my Harleys & have never NEVER broken down or had a set of points screw up on me,...
I do not understand why some cannot set points or maintain them & swapout for electronic,
dunno if it's fear of having to do work or the lacking of knowledge to do the work today even with simple mechanical units.& procedures
