Default 81 FXE starter trouble

I'm having trouble with my starter, I can kick it 1 to 3 tries and start right up but starter won't turn it over, it will try then start humming and won't kick out, have to kick it to get the starter to disengage, new to working on shovels so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated...
