Hope you get the head off and do it right.
If ya put a Spacer ... or especially a Wavy washer, in there... ya deserve whatever happens... if However, someone else was in there... you are correct... pull the head, remove box, check

head is off, and my mechanic is doing it right!

good on you -- what you should have done was ask first no one would have told you to remove the rocker shaft

and the large washer was not in play as it is encapsulated in the machined pocket in the rocker box

while most will agree taking the rocker shaft completely out was the mistake made, once that happened and he did not have any idea what was in the rocker back the question about the washer became mute
