Default 72 shovel runs sputters, backfires, dies

hey guys,

pretty much stock shovel with sifton cams/lifters and bendix Zenith. Bike runs fine for about a mile after starting and then starts sputtering and backfiring and eventually dies. Then I sit for a minute, start it up and it runs for 1/4 mile or so and does the same.

here’s my thought: I think it’s a fuel delivery issue. I’m going to drop the tanks, rinse them out, take out the petcock and clean it and the screen. I already took out the inline fuel filter. Someone said it’s one or the other: screen or filter but not both.

i began draining the tanks and it took 15 minutes to drain about 1/2 gallon of fuel, so,that’s a clue.

I’m asking just in case there’s something I’m overlooking or if it continues after I clean the tanks because I’ll have some time this weekend to work on it.

TIA, y’all! Happy riding this 4th and God Bless America!

How long has it been sitting?
Today's fuel is crap. I've seen fuel lines completely plugged solid.

Do it right. Get a rebuild kit for the carb and replace all of your fuel lines. Now you will cleaned every part of the fuel system.

Don't forget to suspect the Ignition condenser, when they warm up, they Sh$t the bed......unless you've got electronic......could be the sender in that case.

Coax, Carl and pjb, brand new build. Rebuilt carb and works fine. New fuel lines and fuel hasn’t been in it for more than a few weeks. Basically everything is new or rebuilt on the bike. Ultima electronic ignition. Thanks for the replies, guys. All good ideas. I could’ve mentioned that in my post, but I had to end it somewhere.

Its in the secondary of the ignition if you cant get fuel out at the line at the carb...pretty EZ to check.

Have you checked the tank venting? Im not sure how a 72 vented the tank-is it through the cap or a vent tube in the tank itself?
Next time the bike starts to sputter- pop the tank cap and see if the bike comes back to normal.

LOL Badass?
Pull the plugs stick the wires back on them and crank it over. or kick it over, whichever - with plugs firmly against engine
You will see a nice blue spark.
You don't?
in your case replace coil and condenser.
The coil will go bad as all electronics do with heat, age etc.
Most important, get a coil for a points system!
Being you are stalling out after it warms up and runs after cools dwn---probably is the coil.
keep in -mind do check your fuel delivery B4 you do this.
the next time it stalls out unhook fuel line from carb-does fuel run out?
Yes?
Replace coil

Bad ***-
a long time a go doing inserts in HOT LZ, scared as hell.....to the point of being numb
Is that a badass?
Or like most soldiers-doing what we should,
