Did it just start happening? Any change in how she feels rolling down the road? And have you check the fluid?

I have experienced a Whine in 3rd gear often with the old 4-speed. Bottle Gear Bushing, is generally accepted as the cause... it will Not [usually] fail, just annoying until addressed..

the bottle gear bushing has not been used in 3rd gear since 1958 maybe, we see them from time to time but I usually convert the kick only trans to the later 3rd gear and his trans is not a kick only or should not be at an 82

when we take them apart hearing a noise in third its usually the washer to gear has lost its lubrication - you will need to go looking after you get back from your trip just go easy in third

what oil do you use in the gear box ?????

it might be a few things but the gear box needs to be disassembled and looked at carefully not to miss something

funny that its second and third -- second is driving off the countershaft into the main shaft - But third is driving off the main shaft into the counter shaft -

my off the top wild card guess the countershaft thrust washer seized and caused no oil to enter into the countershaft rollers on that end - left side of gear box

Could but you'd have some warning as it will howl like crazy and the bike will lose power quick. Best not to push it that far and it's a much cheaper fix at this point.
