71 FLH Shovelhead
#361
we had modded and installed an evo torque cone in the front header pipes before, but it is a bit of a thing to do and I cant say it did what we were looking for
it comes down to what's the end goal - all out performance or drivability - we are talking street antique shovelhead ---SO
the default is drivability - so for get what I wrote and mod what ever and then tune out any coughs or flat spots - I know I am going to get $hit from some one about this -- BUT they make a thing called a turbulator and its a finned thing to goes into the intake between the carb and manifold - yes it cuts the air down and yes it seems like a smoking mirror - but is balancing out a big S&S carb on a stock or near stock machine your end goal as well ??? it can improve the intake tuning to the point - all the riding enjoying issues come into play

I am a cruiser and only looking for a good running and sounding machine. For me, I like loud (not obnoxiously loud) so the idiots on the road can hear me. As mentioned previously, I have a 96 stroker dual plugs with Super B with the intent of making the bike original/correct on the outside....it will never be original on the inside.
I ordered dual crossovers and if it fits, will be ordering the replica 65242-70B muffs but need to mod for the higher displacement....thanks for the suggestion about modding wheverver I want then just tune it out. The goal is to get the repop muffs close to the paughco 2-2 muffs currently on the bike so I don't have to retune since it is running great.
I guess I can always install these patented and tested Thunder Torque Inserts which I have used previously on 3" muffs with 2.25" baffles for the purpose of reducing/eliminating reversion. Many have used these on open pipes to get back some low-mid range torque and smooth out the gaps in the rpm range.

Back in the late 80's, on stock mufflers, we would just send a large star drill down the muffler and hit it with a BFH. After you felt the center disc "pop", if it didn't come back out with the star drill, start the bike and it would come flying out. Probably wouldn't do that today, but hey we were kids then. Pics taken yesterday, not the easiest thing to see:

I am just a old crusier....already had a Sporty to do the more aggressive stuff. Easier to push down than to lift up. in fact I still hang around the sportster forum to help those members with mods since I am clueless when it comes to helping members with original shovels lol
I do have a question....in my quest for correctness and knowledge....may be a more appropriate question for John
I have seen a few threads about the OEM timing cover "1" from 77-78 which made me think my timing cover was not correct with a raised "1". I am thinking it is OEM 32513-77
Earlier in this thread John and not_so-newb posted pics of their bike with "FLH" 32584-70 on the timing cover which I assume is correct for my year. This is a NOS OEM 32584-70 off ebay.
It does not look like either of their "FLH" decals...is the above decal correct? Not sure if I want to go with decal vs a raised "1" but wanted to know what is correct and if the above decal is the correct one.
Thanks

You can disregard my previous question....I ordered the "FLH" decal 32584-70 from Rick's Restoration Decals (from the same person I bought my tank decals)....excellent quality and reasonable prices (cheaper than the one I found on ebay). Thanks

Just a FYI.....
Beside the "FLH" decal 32584-70 and the tank decals 61145-71 I previously purchased from Rick Simpson, he provided me with some other decals he has available for a 71 FL. Listing it here in case you are looking for something for your FL. I am sure he has other earlier or later year decals. I actually couldn't find the front fender "Electra Glide" for my 71 in the parts book.....thought it was a screw-on type but showed up on Rick's list as a decal.....seems only the guide reflectors 59252-69 have tabs that go through the fender.
#90943-69 & #90944-69 69/71 XL-FL S BAGS - $40.00 SET
#53311-69 TOUR PAK LABEL (SMALL) 69-82 - $20.00 EACH
#67840-70 FLASHER/SPOT LITES - $20.00 EACH
#59169-71 & #59170-71 FRONT FENDER - $40.00 SET
#58RRD-61 WIND SHIELD "KING SIZE" - $20.00 EACH
#58RRD-69 WIND SHIELD "FAIRING" - $20.00 EACH
I have pics if you want to see what they look like.
Here is a brochure of the 71
Here is a pic of Rick's 71 FL with side car but he sold the car.
