Anyone have the paint code for the OE black....or is it called vivid black, gloss black, or something different? If I am going to spend $$, might as well get the right paint.

Are you sure? LOL

I guess it doesn't matter for old bikes. I will use Harley Davidson ColoRite code DH Vivid Black 6304.

Actually there are several Harley black type paints so my question is not unreasonable..
Black (Vivid)
Denim
Cherry
Quartz
Matte
Forest
Magic
Starfire
Gloss

I bought a cheap set of bags and painted them to match.
I run with them sometimes, sometimes without.

Thanks for the images pjb...it helps me to visualize what it would look like if the bags were color-matched since you have a similar color.

However, my objective from the beginning was to keep it as close as possible to OEM/correct on the outside......obviously without repainting the tins.

OE Saddlebags came in black or white....black matched the color-scheme of the bike a lot better than white. I also did not want my bike to look like all the touring bikes out there these days.

It would also tone down the overpowering look of the dual crossover muffs, but most importantly, it will give me space to store my tools and carry stuff....because I hate wearing backpacks.

I believe the mounting brackets that are on the bags are 77> (the one that goes around the front of the bag) but not certain. Ghost indicated it was 77-79. Not what I wanted but at least period correct. I think I will use leather straps (as race has done) instead of clips on the hinges and tie it to the part of the mounting bracket that come around the front of the bags....double security lol - lids and bags will stay on the bike.

.

Any one have OEM saddelebag mounting brackets 90875-63 and 90877-63 for sale that you want to part with? I know the later model brackets will bug me when it is on the bike so might as well do it right and do it right the first time.

Can't find a decent pair on ebay or anywhere else....found one but there was a notch on the rail which probably was modified for caliper. The other one I found was NOS but only one side and overpriced..

But a little confused...I've seen the right side 90875-63 on several sites referred to as one in the pic below....but the left side 90877-63 as noted by FL54.

If no one has one, I guess I will pick up the Vtwin repop 49-2418. (63-77).

Also I checked fender clearance to tire and the left side screw/bolt is super close to the tire. How do you guys get around that....flip the bolt around?

My parts book 1961 and later shows the brackets as 90875-63 right and 90877-63 left. The book is supposed to cover 1961-1976. The bracket you picture is not in the book. May be later than ‘76. Bracket bolt 4042HW is listed as a 5/16-24 x 1 3/4 hex hd.

Thanks FL54....that makes sense and clarifies the discrepancies. Amazing what these sellers will post to identify their product. I even told J&P their OEM references were incorrect and that they should verify to avoid customers buying the wrong product..

I am clear now as to what to look for and what to get......much appreciated.

Agreed. They use the shotgun method in description. Panhead, Shovelhead, Knuckle etc. I'm also suspect when there is a real brief description. I also check the manufacturer and country of origin. Beware "unbranded."
