No heat just a little elbow grease.

I couldn't see the twist originally because I didn't have an axle and the axle flanges are not symmetrical so laying it down doesn't work. I also assumed it was straight when I bought it but at least it was easily fixed.

 

With the axle installed and the castle nut where it should be that tells me the arm isn't pulled in at the flanges and that the taiwan spacer is in fact too long. Ill trim the spacer as needed and make it black.

 

Sprocket needs to move to the left for the chain to clear the tire or I run a 170 .....Ill move the sprocket over on the drum to keep the 180 tire.

 

Next Ill shim the sprocket over with a spacer ring so the chain clears the tire but not so much that the sprocket no longer registers on the drum.

 

I took the original chrome (rusty) wideglide hub and had it powder coated to match the rear but left the flanges original. With two rotors its not a highly visible part, the star hub and bearing snout is.

2 things I wasn't thrilled about with the new rim from HD is the word Indonesia (thankfully hidden once a tire is installed) and the smooth outer lip vs the contoured original design. On a positive note the rim feels robust, has anti-slip serrations that grip the tire bead vs the smooth original and the rims are the same weight so no cost cutting material-wise, just paid labour-wise.

 

 

Im having a spacer ring for the sprocket laser cut by a friend which Ill get next week. Ill focus on the handle bars and truing the new front wheel. Once I have tires Ill put it on the ground and lower the front end, establish the ride height as well.

What a difference a can of black spray paint makes on a white wall tire! No more distraction, love the fat rear tire, its no steam roller but just right for me.

 

Switched the manifold to the angled one I had bought and it improves leg room for sure but its not perfect - looks awesome though! I plan to move the pegs down and forward anyway so I fit better on the bike which will fix my carb / leg issue.

 

The tin starter to primary is the old way yes it works But the james rubber one if its oiled or dry it does not leak if its dry it keeps water and dirt out unlike the o ring

 

My thought is an open belt primary with a modern starter which is why I went with the ratchet top trans. I haven't pulled the trigger on that setup yet because Im not 100% sure. I do like the beefy and unmistakable look of the stock primary which is what has me torn.
