Maybe my story will help.
I've rode for 26 years before I purchased my first HD. It was a plain black 2005 Ultra classic. I owned it from 2005 until I traded it for a 2013 CVO Ultra.
During those 7 or 8 years I put 20,000 into the 05. Chrome, engine upgrade, cams, corbin seat, suspension, more engine work, exhaust. You all know the story. When I traded it in no one cared that I put 20K into the bike and the dealer I traded it to had done all the work. They took the book value and added a tad more for all of my extra's.
I wanted a CVO for several years but never liked the colors of the 2010, 11 or 12. When I saw the tribal orange I traded my 05 in. Why, because I wanted it and because the bike starts at 38K and will depreciate from 38K. Unlike my last bike that started at 20K and depreciated from 20K even though I was into the bike for at least 40K.
