my 05 cvo fatboy is the silver & slate color, underneath the clear coat on the very front of the front fender where the brush look is there is a discoloration that just popped up out of no where....its not big.....but its there .........

it looks like slight rust underneath the clear on the metal swirls?

i seen another cvo on ebay that had the same thing......but worse.

anybody else?

what can be done?

The front fender tip on mine had a rock ding, used touch up and clear over that and it looked pretty good. I got to it fast before anything else could happen.

Now, mine was in the platinum not the metal grind. Never had an issue with corrosion showing under the clear coat but heard of others that did. Sorry John, wish I could help.. maybe see a local body/paint guy and ask his opinion??

thanx wizard.......

its not missing any clear or paint....never damaged or rock chipped....

i felt & looked under the tip of the fender & it looks like where the lip bends underneath has a slight gap & maybe they did not seal it good enough & water got in?

i wonder how many other cvo have done what mine has? its not bad but its there & bugs me.....

I have had a couple of thin rust lines start at the tip of the fender and go aft about 1/2". The first time was about 2-1/2 years ago. I sanded the area around the rust marks and shot clear coat, from a spray can, on it. It came out looking pretty good. About 1-1/2 years later another rust line showed up, so I did it again. No rust lines since then. I bought a chrome fender tip to cover the area where I had to sand, but never put it on. The hardest part is to keep the same swirl pattern in the fender when you sand it.

mine has the same at the back rear of the back fender. A small spot smaller than a dime. But smooth on top and smooth on bottom. Definitely a rust color but so far no damage. Again, do we take these to a good painter or just live with it. It is definitely under the clear coat

Not happy about it but it is there and is small.

I sanded deep enough into the rust lines to make sure I got all the rust.
Then I sanded to fair it in good. then I used different grades of sand paper and hand sanded it to match the original swirl pattern.
The area I worked on was only the forward 3/4" of the front fender.
I made sure that if it came out looking crappy I could still cover the part I worked on with a chrome fender tip.

sdozier.....i know it sucks for it to do that, for no reason at all....mine has no damage above or below the clear coat or for that matter.... no damage any where.....but its there under the clear coat.

i dont know if i feel balsy enough to do what tmitchell did, sand & reclear.

for all the $$$$$ we paid for these cvo you would think this wouldnt happen.....

the sad thing is, i know there is more of us out there with this happening......

I think you can still order a new front, painted, SE, Fat Boy,fender for around $375. Check to see if HD still sells them. If they do, you have that to fall back on, if you don't like the results of trying to fix it yourself.
You also have a choice of fender tips that you could put on to cover the area that is screwed up. If you use a fender tip, you still need to get the rust out or it will continue to spread.
I bought a chrome fender tip, with an eagle on it. It is still in my tool box since I was satisfied with the results of my sand and clear spray job
I'm an amateur at doing things like this, so you might want to talk to a real painter.
My first attempt, after sanding, I taped off 3/4" of the front fender and used a spray can to put on the clear. This left a noticeable line between the new and old clear coats. My next attempt, I covered the fender up to the forward 3/4" with a towel and taped off 1-1/4" back. I applied a good coat of clear on the sanded area then barely pulled back the towel and lightly sprayed toward the tape, so the new clear would fair into the original clear. That came out fine.

I also sprayed clear up under the front of the fender.
There was no noticeable damage on my fender when the thin rust lines appeared.
