Default Recall on cracked rear wheel SERG

On one of the other CVO forums there was a post about a recall on early 09' production SERG rear wheel. Go to the HD website type in your VIN and it will let you know if yours was effected. T.

Subject: Safety Recall Campaign 0140

Dear Harley-Davidson Dealer:

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on certain model year 2009 FLTRSE3 model motorcycles manufactured October 3, 2008 through May 5, 2009 and shipped before May 14, 2009, as well as certain “Blade” rear wheel accessory kits manufactured November 3, 2008 through May 5, 2009 for installation on 2009 Touring family motorcycles. Some “Blade” rear wheels, P/N 40788-09, (also part of the “Blade” rear wheel kit P/N 42091-09) manufactured during this timeframe underwent a secondary heat treatment process. Wheels that underwent this secondary process may have a crack. If a crack is present, it could result in wheel failure during use, possibly leading to a crash, which could result in injury or death of the rider.

We have voluntarily declared this a defect related to motor vehicle safety (Campaign 0140) to allow us to formally recall all affected motorcycles and accessory wheel kits. The remedy is to remove the rear wheel and tire and inspect the manufacturer’s code on the inside of the wheel, in the “drop center” area of the wheel. Wheels with the suspect “R1” or “R2” code will be replaced with a wheel provided in the recall repair kit. Wheels that do not have the suspect code will be re-installed on the motorcycle. A service bulletin outlining the repair and credit procedure will follow within ten days. Based on the schedule our supplier has provided we expect to have wheel replacement recall repair kits available on or before the week of July 20, 2009. Wave shipments will not be conducted because the kit quantities made available will match the quantity of 125 suspect wheels shipped world-wide. Please reference the Service Bulletin for a detailed description of the defect.

Default Serial No.'s in the wheel

When I received the mailed recall notice, I immediately called my dealer to discuss my options. They explained that it's best to bring it in because they have to remove rear wheel AND tire. The wheel's serial no. is on the inside of the rim, which had to be viewed to confirm whether it was one that was from the group of wheels that was suspect. Turns out mine was not wtihin that group and I purchased the SERG new in Feb. 09.
