Default 4.5 gal. Gas Tank

I put 174.5 miles on the bike and when I gassed up it only took 3.1 gallons to top it off. The reserve light comes on about 160 miles. According to the manual if I put 3.1 gal. I must have had about 1.4 gal. left in the tank. I could have gone about 60 or 70 more miles before I ran out. The bike is a 03 STSE deuce cvo. What gives?

My 2008 FXDSE2 gets about 45-50 mpg with a 5 gallon tank. I get a warning light with about 160-170 miles on the tank..it is OK with me to have a gallon in reserve. I rise the bike pretty hard and notice a big difference in my mileage...maybe 5-10 miles/gallon difference (lots of mountain roads in Roanoke, Virginia on the Blue Ridge Parkway). My light hangs pretty long on the last light and it will sometimes move 1-2 lights depending on whether I am climbing a big hill or descending one. It may be worth carrying a 1/2 gallon of gas and letting the bike run out so you know exactly what the capacity is...myself, at 150-160 miles I just become aware of where I am and the next gas station.
