Looks like a week sidewall. Under inflation can cause heat build up and in turn cause a tire to blow.

Hope you recover soon.

Look at the date on the tire. Should not go more than 4 years on a set of tires irregardless of mileage. Tire looks old and dry rotted to me. Glad your alive!

Good point. Tires, rubber brake, and oil lines should be changed every five years or so regardless of mileage.

I was diligent about checking tire pressure

Looking at the erosion/wear marks on the sidewall, it looks like something was rubbing on the sidewall. This rubbing may have been the cause of the "thinning" of the sidewall. Thus, the failure.
Heck of a first post tho.
Welcome to the site.
After reviewing the pics again, I notice that tire doesn't have very many miles on it, as it still has the "****" on the tread portion. Was this a recent event after a tire install?

EDIT~ What injuries did you sustain?

Well age is not the issue. How many miles on them? How hot was it that day? Was something rubbing it?

Sounds like no issues with tire. Sometimes **** just happens. I went down last year, spent two weeks in the hospital and still not fully recovered. I don’t have a clue what happened.
