big sucker or screaming eagle with the round air cleaner and backing plate , not the snorkle type, uses the stock football cover , but flows a lot better. Actually bought my first one becuase the are re usable, just clean and reoil , live in a dusty are and 2 new stock air filters covered the cost of the big sucker, got them on all my bikes now. short answer , yeah they help, and save you money in the long run.wr

You may want to consider going with a Free Flowing Air Cleaner that vents externally, like one of the Outlaws 587 or 636v, which do not allow the dirty air back in.
The EPA has required Harley to route dirty, oily crankcase air back into the air cleaner compromising the performance of your engine. The Outlaw Breathers vents it without compromising the performance or longevity of your motor.

I think my plan is to get a tuner and a map for stock configuration. Then at a later date decide if or what I may change. I really like the look as is so I may only had a de-catted head pipe to reduce heat as well as flow better. If I can just replace the filter element and keep the stock look, that's the route I'd prefer.
