Default Sturgis the easy way? yep!

My first Sturgis trip, on a whim after my Bike week was canceled this year:
My normal Texas riding buddy called me the day after my trip to Fla. was canceled after another riding buddy hurt his shoulder. he said he was planning on trailering and had room for my road king. I didn't hesitate and the planning started. We rented a house in Spearfish for 8, set our trailers up and planned our rides and events. As things got close, a typical incident in which one rider backed out leaving us with a trailer for 4 bikes and 4 riders and 3 passengers. My wife and I elected to travel by our own car9 and route as we wanted to visit relatives during the travel.
leaving early Saturday morning, 8-2, we traveled to Denver from Ft Worth via hiway 287, stopping for fuel, eats and the Cadillac ranch for photo op( our 26 year anniversary was 8-4 so we painted our names and date on one of the cars for pics)
left Denver early Sunday morning for the run to Spearfish by way of hiway 25 and then 85 and we got a trip the Spearfish canyon in the wife’s hot rod.
All parties arrived about the same time so we unloaded, unpacked, set up and went out for an evening ride down the canyon, then out to deadwood and back to Spearfish for a 55 mile run. Got in the hot tub at the rental house for a nice relaxing evening.
Woke up early Monday for a run out to the devils tower. Checking the map, I decided to head up to Belle Fourche then up 212 to Alzada MT then down to Hubill then out to the Tower. great idea but the road in Wyoming was tore up and gravel for 8 miles. Ugly but dry and we made good time for a great day of travel.
Tuesday morning was the run down to Mt Rushmore, Custer wildlife loop, needles and crazy horse. we planned to ride a lot that day but while visiting crazy horse, the weather rolled in and we made our way north on 385 until we got to the sugar shack/easy glider and the hail hit, and hit it did. 3 inches on the road with at least one bike down, we pulled into the sugar shack and took cover for over an hour. after leaving, we waited in line for the emergency crew to clean up the mess and a snow plow to clear the road. we finally got back, cold and frazzled but all of our group was dry and safe.
Wednesday was a day of fun so we rode down to Sturgis, went out to the Chip and FTS and hung around downtown until late and night.
Thursday, we headed out to the badlands, Wall and then back to hit the wildlife loop and iron mountain road that we missed Tuesday. a 350 mile day, awesome views and a great road for sure.
Friday was the amateur hill climb on i-90 then back into town for trinkets. then we rode out to deadwood for the evening, gambled and then home.
We got up Saturday, cleaned the house and tub, pack, loaded the bikes and rolled back towards Texas.
I am so glad we trailer as we got bad weather both directions. 2450 car miles and 995 bikes miles made for a long but awesome week. Lots more tales and many pics.
