Ride Route Question - US 50 Across Nevada
Want to take US50 from the junction of Interstate 15 and Interstate 70 across Nevada to Reno. Planning this for first week of August 2014.
Can anyone offer info with regards to weather this time of year, accomodations in Ely perhaps. General road condition of US50 for that stretch. I know US50 across Colorado is a pretty good road, how about Nevada? Will I hit the Four Horsemen of Bad Weather ie Thunder, Lightning, Hail, and Rain this time of year?
thanks to all!

The biggest weather issue that time of year is a nasty thunderstorm and a drenching rain.
I have traveled 50 a number of times in the past year. Pm me for suggestions, etc.

There are a good number of decent lodging places in Ely. My favorite is the Hotel Nevada. Very biker friendly. US 50 is in good shape so the condition of the highway should not be a concern. Two strong suggestions. Don't pass up a gas pump and carry plenty of water.

If you see one of those rainstorms on the highway ahead, wait for them to blow through. Those flash flood warnings are for a reason. Rode into one some years ago, I couldn't have gotten any wetter if I'd rode into a swimming pool. Nice thing is it keeps you cool for a while and the pinons and sage smell amazing after the storm.

Are you thinking about making time or actually doing some sight seeing or at least an interesting trip. Here is what I found. I 70 and US 50 are the same road in Utah. It (they) pass within 35 miles of Moab and just west of the Moab turn off is Utah 24, which leads to UT 12 and Capitla Reef NP, Escalante NP and Bryce Canyon NP. UT12 is one of those "million dollar" routes. I say this because it was a terrific route.
Last year, i kinda did your route in reverse, from Oregon. On my way out, I stayed in Ely and did US50. I was suppose to have turned south right at the Utah/Nevada border and diagonal towards Bryce. Well, I missed the turn off and stayed on US 50 east bound that eventually came to Delta. In my opinion, that section of US 50 was the worst possible road for all the usual reasons. It was flat, straight and crossed the most uninteresting salt flats, and all the while taking a northeasterly track. When I finally found I 15, I had to go due south for 60 miles or so, just to get to the I 70 /US 50 exit (I stayed south for another 30 miles to take the scenic route. Maybe it was because I missed my cutoff but for the 80+ mile "detour", I just hated the US 50 route on this west side of I15.
All I am saying is 1) get off I70 at Green River UT and take UT 12 across the lower section of Utah and 2) diagonal northwest on UT 21 where it will join US 50 just as it crosses the Nevada border. You will skip mind-numbing nothingness and actual see some of the best Utah has to offer.
