Default Skyline Drive 10/11-10/13

Yea, it's a holiday weekend so it'll probably be a zoo, but this is the olnly time we can get off. Booked a room at the Holiday in Front Royal for $160/night. Thought this was a little pricey, anybody have any cheaper suggestions? In Charlotsville we are booked at the English Inn for $120/night and I think that is pricey also, any suggestions there. To anyone that has ridden this, I would like for some suggestions for must see pull overs on the Drive and a good suggestion for lunch. Thanks Guys!

Wow, 160 does seem high. I am just outside of Front Royal. The holiday Inn is the newest hotel in the area and probably the best. A lot of the older motels in town have seen better years, and are filled with seedy folks living in them. Skyline has the potential to be a traffic mess that time of year, I have seen traffic backed up almost seven miles to get into the park on my way to church. If it seems like it is to crowded there are other roads that are just as good. Try Rt. 231 up from Orange through Sperryville to Front Royal via Rt. 522. Another real nice ride is Fort Valley Rd. from Page Valley (east of Luray). That route takes you over the mountain and through Fort Valley. Very pretty with some nice mountain scenery and a few switchbacks at the top. Fort Valley Rd. ends on Rt. 55, it is a straight run into Front Royal on Rt.55 from there. Try the Melting Pot for unique pizza (FYI cash only) or if you run up north into Berryville the Santorini Grill has good gyros and chicken souvalki (It isn't much to look at but have no fear). If you have any area questions feel free to ask, I have been out here for eleven years now and might be able to help.

Try the Best Western in Waynesville at the end of the Drive on 64 or go into Staunton. There are many hotels there that are much less expensive.

Tucker99 It maybe over by the time you ride, but the Gov just shutdown and the National Parks (which controls the section of your ride) will be closed. Again, by the time you ride, the shutdown maybe over. Grumpy

We stayed in Galax, Va. a few miles off the parkway at a Knights in and it was around $50 a night or so. But don't expect much, just a room, bed and semi-clean bathroom. But if you are just looking for a cheap place to stay along the way it works, and there is a bar/diner within walking distance.

$160 a night. Ouch. Did the Skyline and the entire Blue Ridge in June and used the campgrounds on the Blue Ridge. $8 per night.

Try the Skyland lodge, in the park. Stayed there years ago, and it was competitive with nice motels outside the park, but the view is something to write home about. Quiet place, nice restaurant. IF the government starts up again......

Wife and I will be down the following weekend, 18, 19, 20, 21. Hoping to do the Skyline but with e Gov. shut down who knows.
I have a ride plotted out as a filler, basically rts 340 to 250 to 28 to 33 to 11 to 211 with some fillers in between.

Crowds on the Skyline scare me......
