VA to SC on Rt 17
Taking a trip down to Charleston SC in a couple weeks...thinking about running down Route 17 most of the way. Prefer to stay off I95 but then again don't want to spend a lot of time at a 100 redlights. Heard there are new bypasses around most of the bigger towns on the way but not sure. Has anyone taken this route and if so is it a good choice? Thanks for any feedback.

Route 17 is still somewhat old school..
Plenty of by passes, some red lights (growth).
Not sure in MD where your starting but traffic really starts at the Bay Bridge tunnel ,Norfolk area, and thins out around Elizabeth city,NC border, next real major area is Wilmington, NC then The Myrtle beach 50 mile drag strip area..
Otherwise standard 2 lane some 4 lane
I travel it from Savannah to Rehobeth couple times a year..
Plenty of by passes, some red lights (growth).

Tks Kato...appreciate the info. I'll be coming from Southern MD so won't be going over the Bay Bridge Tunnel route...instead down through Tappahonek through Yorktown and around Norfolk to Elizabeth City. Again, thanks for the info.

When coming south on 17 above Wilmington follow the signs for Rt 140 and you scoot the outside of Wilmington when you get into Little River SC you can take Rte 9 for a couple of miles and then take 31 south past Myrtle Beach, take it all the way to the end 35-40 miles or so and take, I believe it is 504 or 540 east towards the beach area, about 10 miles, will pick up 17 south of Myrtle
