If you are looking for interesting roads to ride on the way down, why not swing east after Mantua and catch Rte 170 from Poland, OH to Calcutta, OH? The 14th best ride in the country according to AMA. Then you could follow the river south on Rte 7 to 250. It won't be as good as The Dragon, but maybe more fun than your original route in Ohio.

Also don't forget the NC 209 - The Rattler or US 28 - The Moonshine 28.
Also the ride to Bald River Falls is a nice little detour off the Cherohala SkyHwy
We stayed at the Ironhorse Motorcycle Lodge (http://www.ironhorsenc.com) very nice, one word of warning, its a dry county so if you stay there stock up with beverages before you get there

I am from Youngstown and my group and I just did the Dragon about a month ago...plenty of twisties when u get down so we just took all freeway there...fyi, it seems to rain of and on quit often, probably due to the elevation and mountains....just get there and enjoy urself...Rt 7, 250 and all the others are not very far for u due in one day and back to the Cleveland area...Don't waste ur time on them now...u can do those roads anytime...we left from ytown and headed to canton to pick a friend and then proceeded to 77 South to 81...I know that way is 500 plus miles to get there and will take u at least 10 hours on a bike if u make one stop for an actual meal...good luck..
