Default MASS to WVA

Leaving from Central Mass. Don't usually go thru Ct but trying to save time however must avoid Horrid Hartford. Anyone have suggestions as to routes to WVA that are not nasty highways that go thru major cities?

Realize there must be some highway travel but want to make this pleasant and timely. Once in WVA, will be touring.

Thank you.

From lancaster pa and Last year we were up in cape Breton and came back through your white mountains over to Albany NY then down 87, west on 84 then south on 81 then down to Lancaster pa. Was ok ridin for interstate, we went that way to avoid the traffic in CT and around NY city. Not sure how much time you have there are some nice secondary roads in Pa but it would add to your time getting to WV.

I'm in upstate PA. Used to have family in Greenfield, and I never went through Hartford to get there. You'll have to do some interstates, but after Albany, it's a piece of cake. I'd go Mass Pike to the Thruway to Schenectady, and down 88 to Binghamton. (Stay on Thruway & go right through Albany. You won't have any problem.) At Binghamton NY, take 17/86 west to Corning, and then down 15 to Williamsport PA. Then 220 south to interstate 80 (80 & 220 will be concurrent for awhile) to the Bellefonte exit & it's 220/interstate 99 south. 99's a great ride & there's hardly any traffic. Take it all the way to Cumberland MD, and then 68 west to WV. 68's a beautiful, hilly, scenic ride.

I'm sure it's further than Ultra Rider's Mass Pike, 87, 84, 81, but it might be a less stressful ride. If you go 81, you can pick up 68 down near Hagerstown MD. 81's real busy through Scranton & Wilkes Barre PA, and then not bad til you get to Harrisburg. From Hbg all the way to 68 in Hagerstown, 81 will be jammed. It always is. 81 & 95 are about the only 2 north-south big roads for trucks, from this part of the world. Knowing what I know, I'd leave a day earlier & go a little further west in PA, and down 99.
