Default Nor Cal Riders (Bay area to Lake Tahoe)

Trying to plan a spring time trip from the Bay Area to So. Lake Tahoe by way of Angels Camp and Markleeville. I say Markleeville because I am thinking of going up Hwy 4 then cutting over to Hwy 89 then down into Lake Tahoe. Is Hwy 4 a good choice or is Hwy 88 a better choice? Hwy 4 looks pretty desolate whereas Hwy 88 looks like it may have places to stop. Appreciate your thoughts on this.

Gonzy,

I have taken both roads many times. While 88 is a very nice ride, you can't go wrong on Highway 4. It is an awesome ride with many switchbacks and great scenery. Keeping your eye on the road is important but there is plenty to see anyway, In Markleville there is a restaraunt at he end of town that serves awesome hamburgers. Can't remember the name but it is on the left side of the road.

My vote is Highway 4.

Let me know how's your experience of the road trip. I was planning it with my friends from sometime, but we couldn't make it. Hope next time it will be succeeded.

I've ridden both 88 and 4 several times. Both are great bike roads, 88 has more sweepers and relatively gentle turns, 4 gets tight and twisty. I'd recomend a loop, go up 4 and come back 88.

Markleeville is a cool little town, more than one place to get a good meal. Gas will be expensive there though.

A spring trip may disappoint you. As you head south over the Sierras, the elevation goes up I80 is 7000 ft as is US50. All the others are 8000+. This year the snows are hitting early and heavy. I doubt either route will be clear until June. But you never know.

yeah I figure as much, I just threw spring out there so people wouldn't think that I plan on making this trip now. Summer will be more like it anyway. But thanks.
