Any commenst on the best travel route from the Albany Ny area to WV on the western side (not VA side) crossing thru PA. I'd like to ride decent secondary roads that do not place me in the middle of any major city. If some of the highways in more remote areas make sense, love to hear about which stretch. Thank you

I'd take the thruway west over to 88, and down to Binghamton.
17/86 west over to Corning.
15 south to Williamsport PA
220 south to 80.
80 west to the Bellefonte/State College exit
99 south all the way to Cumberland MD
68 west to Morgantown
The worst traffic you'll go through will be leaving Albany! Piece of cake going through Binghamton. 68 west from Cumberland MD is beautiful country. Runs into WV, and then you're on your own from there! These are 4-lane roads, but you won't have any traffic that's anywhere near what you have in Albany. Pretty easy route.

I just checked that out on the map.Does look like a good option. I was not certain what appeared to be major routes would actually be lightly traveled.
Is it worth returning via western PA and then thru NY? It seems some folks really like the roads on that side of the state. We have 8 travel days but wantto see some stuff not just ride all day.
I have ridden across a good part of PA 6 but too many gas drilling trucks.

Not as much traffic over here now. Most of 'em went to Ohio. Route 6, west of Wellsboro is still a great ride. Riding through Morgantown might not be bad, but the traffic you're trying to avoid, you'll run into going through Washington PA, where 79 & the PA turnpike & 70 all come together. I wouldn't wanna ride there. Way too busy for me. If it's not too far out of the way, take 77 up through Ohio, to 80 east. Somewhere around Clarion PA, take 66 north up to Kane, and then 6 east. 66 & 6 will be great riding. I'd avoid 17/86 in NY, between Erie PA & Olean NY. You will have never been on a worse road in your life, in that stretch. Like riding a horse through there.

sbcvulcan --- 26 goes south in PA, at Bellefonte/State College, on route 80. Runs parallel to 99, down toward Bedford & Cumberland MD. Might as well just do 99 from there to Cumberland. Won't be any traffic, and you can set your cruise. Also, after thinking about it, the PA turnpike doesn't go through Washington PA, but Washington's traffic is pretty bad. That alternate 40 is a great ride too, but it goes from 68 up toward the PA turnpike --- maybe heads more north & west than you want to be. You'd pick it up around Grantsville MD.
