That alternate 40 is a great ride too, but it goes from 68 up toward the PA turnpike --- maybe heads more north & west than you want to be. You'd pick it up around Grantsville MD.
If they are taking the direct route you would be correct. For back road you know for yourself Pa has a lot of very good sights. Route 26 is one of the best.

99 after Bedford is nice. You could pickup 50 west from 220 south very nice.

Never been on 26, south of State College. I have to go to Altoona one of these days, to look at a potential new customer. Maybe I'll try 26 down to 22 for something different. Thanks.

ok so I have had some time to look this over. So to gain time I;d go 99, (which is also 220?)not crowded, less scenic. If I want to see more , I'd take 26. Now want to connect with 50 if that is a nice route in WVA going west.Coming off 40 what is the best connecting road with that? And while on topic anything interesting in southestern Ohio or perhaps i shoudl ask about that seperately.

220 & 99 are the same road. 220 used to be a 2-lane all the way down from route 80. It's a new 4-lane Interstate 99 now, just within the last few years, and avoids going through alot of little towns. Follow 220/99. Down at the PA Turnpike, it'll just be 220 again because it's 2-lane all the way to Cumberland. To save time, stick to 99. Hardly any traffic. Keep following 220 through Cumberland MD, and it runs into 50. Do a Google search on New River Gorge Bridge, and see if you'll be anywhere near there. That's the big high bridge where everybody does the bungee jumping & B.A.S.E. jump parachuting.

If you find yourself around Cumberland or Oakland, MD head over to US 50. It's a good 2 lane twisty till you get to Clarksburg.
