Default Going East

My wife and I are leaving southern Indiana for a seven day road trip, the last week in August. Wanting to go North East through New York and all the way to Maine time allowing. I have never been East at all, just wanting thoughts on roads, places to eat, and good rides along the way?

Route 6 in PA. (enters PA up around Youngstown OH) Nice ride, and 6 is a U.S. route, so it goes all the way across the state. Google Kinzua Bridge State Park, and PA Grand Canyon. Both on 6, and worth a stop along the way. 6 to 15 north, to 414 to Watkins Glen NY. 14 up through wine country & wine tours to Lake Ontario. Then 104 over to 81, and up to Watertown. 3 east through Lake Placid area (stop at Whiteface Mountain) and then a ferry across Lake Champlain, through VT & NH. Nice trip going that way.

17/86 in southern tier of NY, coming out of Erie PA, is one of the roughest roads you'll ever have been on, for about 50 or 60 miles (if I remember correctly, last time I was over there in the car.) I'd avoid it. Much nicer to go east through northern tier of PA. The central & eastern NY roads that I gave you are fine. On way home you can take the Lake Ontario Pkwy to Niagara Falls if you want. 90 to Erie, and then Cleveland isn't bad at all. You can find your way home from there!

If you have to ride in Connecticut, ride Rt 7. Kent would be the place to stop.

Curlybill & jrbean are correct. I just did a long weekend trip on those roads last month. Beautiful ride, very little traffic, great scenery.

Lake Champlain (NY)

I live in Ky and went that way a couple of years ago. We went thru Lexington then Charleston WV on the big road. South of Charleston WV we hit 60 east. Very nice ride, New River Gorge. Made our way to the Blue Ridge Pky and went north to Skyline Drive and then into DC on Sunday evening it wasn't too bad. We went all the way to Ocean City MD sunday night. You can do anything from there. When You hit the Blue Ridge you can go north or south and its pretty good. If you go south you can get to TN and the Dragon. Lots of possibilities.
